Condemned Iranian Kurdish Activists on Hunger Strike: KHRP Appeals to UN Secretary General |
KHRP wishes to express its continued concern regarding the welfare
of the two Kurdish journalists, Hiwa Butimar and Adnan Hassanpur, who
are facing execution in Iran. Despite pressure by the European Union,
Italy and numerous NGOs, the Iranian Ministry of Justice has confirmed
the death sentences.
Both men have been on a hunger strike
for 38 days in protest against their arbitrary arrest, unfair trial,
sentencing and the appalling conditions of their detention. KHRP has
appealed to the United Nations Secretary General to take immediate
action to encourage Iran to comply with its obligations under the
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The lives of
these two men are seriously at risk unless immediate action is taken.

Kurdish Human Rights Project Concerned at Flight Risk in Trial of Extra-Judicial Killing Suspect |
In May this year a case was opened against
Gültekin Sütçü, a former member of Turkish security forces, for
involvement in the killing of Mehmet Şerif Avşar in 1994. Though
several other people were convicted in 2000 for involvement in the
killing, Sütçü was in hiding until October 2006, when he was arrested
entering Turkey from Bulgaria. He is thought to be equally if not fully
responsible for Avşar‘s murder.
Mehmet
Şerif Avşar was taken into custody by several armed policemen on 22
April 1994 in Diyarbakır and was later found dead. His family took a
case to the European Court of Human Rights with the assistance of KHRP.
In 2002 the Court found Turkey responsible for Avşar’s killing, in
violation of the right to life as enshrined in Article 2 of the
European Convention of Human Rights. It also found under Articles 2 and
13 that Turkey failed adequately to investigate the killing.

KHRP Condemns Wednesday’s Devastating Bomb Attack in Mosul |
KHRP condemns the horrific attack carried out on Wednesday against innocent civilians near Mosul.
The
bombing, which involved the explosion of several petrol tankers in a
crowded village area, is feared to have killed up to 400 people.
Hundreds more have been injured, while attempts to rescue civilians
trapped under rubble are ongoing. The attack was seemingly deliberately
aimed at the minority Kurdish Yezidi religious community.
In
reaction to news of the attack, KHRP Deputy Director Rachel Bernu today
stated: “This attack reveals the threats faced by minorities,
especially religious minorities, even in relatively stable regions of
Iraq. It is essential that the authorities in Iraq deal with such
violent acts not simply through security measures, but through
cooperation with regional and local governments. The utmost priority
must be given to the development of democratic institutions, the rule
of law and the adequate protection of minorities and unarmed civilians
across the country."

UN Committee Against Torture finds Azerbaijan in Violation of Kurdish Journalist’s Human Rights |
KHRP has just received news that the Committee Against Torture (CAT) has found Azerbaijan to be in violation of Articles 3 and 22 of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment for the extradition to Turkey of Ms Elif Pelit, a Kurdish journalist with refugee status in Germany.
From 1993-1996 Ms Pelit was detained in Turkey on charges of “subversive activities and terrorism” but was released due to lack of evidence. She claims that she was tortured whilst in detention. On her release, she fled to Germany where she was granted refugee status. She later began working as a journalist for a pro-Kurdish news agency. In 2003 she was sent to cover the events in Iraq and was attacked by unidentified armed individuals in Mosul in 2004, who seized her travel documents. In November 2004 Ms Pelit illegally entered Azerbaijan in order to contact the German Embassy and recover her travel documents but was arrested by the Azerbaijani authorities for illegal entry into the country.

URGENT: KHRP Concerned for Two Kurdish Activists Facing Death Sentence in Iran |
KHRP is deeply concerned about the recent sentence handed down to two
Kurdish activists by the Iranian courts in July. Journalist Adnan
Hassanpur and social activist Hiwa Butimar were sentenced to death
after nearly six months in prison where they have faced torture and
degrading treatment. They were not represented by their own lawyers, as
they were only informed of the trial 24 hours before it was due to
begin. Nor did they have enough time to travel to Marivan where the
hearing was held. Mr Butimar and Mr Hassanpour were represented instead
by a duty solicitor; duty solicitors are widely considered to be agents
of the state.
