There is estimated 40,000 Kurds (0.9% of population) in the Republic of Georgia (SOURCE: KHRP Report, Kurds in the former Soviet Union - November 1996).
A B O U T G E O R G I A
The Republic of Georgia is located in Caucasia, on the eastern shore of the Black Sea. It is bordered on the north by Russia, on the southwest by Turkey, and on the southeast by Armenia and Azerbaijan. The capital city is Tbilisi (Tiflis).
P E O P L E
Ethnic Georgians comprise 70.1 percent of the population. They speak a Caucasian language, and their traditional religious institution is the Georgian Orthodox church. The Georgian language has the largest number of speakers in the Caucasian group.
The largest ethnic minorities are Armenians (8.1 percent),
Russians (6.3 percent), and Azeris (5.7 percent). Kurds constitute just under
1% of total population.
