KHRP Alarmed by Deteriorating Human Rights Situation in Iran Following Elections

KHRP today condemned the repressive measures taken by the Iranian authorities in the aftermath of the country’s recent presidential elections.

The methods employed – including violent suppression of demonstrations, arrests of activists and strict restrictions on media reporting – have no place in a democratic society. In addition to the mass protests seen in Tehran and the deaths of at least seven people there in recent days, there have also been reports of unrest in the Kurdish regions, including alleged shootings by security forces in the city of Marivan.

‘Sadly, the human rights violations that have been caught on video since the elections are not isolated events, and indeed are all too common in Iran. People who criticise or peacefully challenge the Islamic Republic - whether this is because they are Kurdish, Baluchi, Azeri, Arab, Christian, Jewish, or homosexual, or women - are treated with brute force,’ said KHRP Deputy Director Rachel Bernu. ‘Iran has a responsibility to its citizens to respect their inherent rights to freedom of expression and association, as well as the basic rights to life and liberty, and to act within the rule of law.’
