KHRP condemns the horrific attack carried out on Wednesday against innocent civilians near Mosul.
The
bombing, which involved the explosion of several petrol tankers in a
crowded village area, is feared to have killed up to 400 people.
Hundreds more have been injured, while attempts to rescue civilians
trapped under rubble are ongoing. The attack was seemingly deliberately
aimed at the minority Kurdish Yezidi religious community.
In
reaction to news of the attack, KHRP Deputy Director Rachel Bernu today
stated: “This attack reveals the threats faced by minorities,
especially religious minorities, even in relatively stable regions of
Iraq. It is essential that the authorities in Iraq deal with such
violent acts not simply through security measures, but through
cooperation with regional and local governments. The utmost priority
must be given to the development of democratic institutions, the rule
of law and the adequate protection of minorities and unarmed civilians
across the country."
