Join KHRP in Celebrating 15 Years of Success!CLICK HERE TO DONATE ONLINE TO KHRP KHRP was born from a desire to save lives and to use the framework of international human rights to bring perpetrators of human rights abuse to justice across the Kurdish regions. Much has been achieved in the 15 years since it began. Back in 1992, tens of thousands of Kurds were dying and millions were suffering from the effects of internal displacement. Their language was still banned in Turkey; local Kurdish NGOs did not exist; and internationally, few even knew about the existence of the Kurds or their plight. Nobody in the international community was engaged in a strategic and cohesive response to the acts of genocide, war crimes and grave violations of human rights that were at that time commonplace in the Kurdish regions. KHRP's precedent-setting work at the European Court of Human Rights and its engagement with the OSCE, UN and other international bodies, quickly came to influence new dimensions of international law and change the discourse surrounding Kurds and human rights. KHRP became the first organisation to enable individuals to bring cases against the Turkish government at the European Court. It has since helped over 500 of those in most dire need– minorities, internally displaced persons, women, children, and increasingly, human rights defenders– to obtain legal redress. It has helped to reduce detention periods throughout Turkey, and with it, the likelihood of torture and ill treatment. Rape is now recognised as a form of torture across all 46 member states of the Council of Europe, while the death penalty has become widely recognised as having no legitimate place in modern democratic states. More widely, because of KHRP’s persistence in highlighting human rights developments in conjunction with a focus on the geopolitical shifts in the region —such as the Turkish bid for EU accession and the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq— the Kurdish issue has rightly assumed importance on the international agenda. As it reaches its 15-year milestone and presses ahead with its innovative expansion plans, please join us in celebration of KHRP’s groundbreaking achievements. KHRP has many exciting new endeavours planned for 2008, including an anniversary photo project with the respected Delfina Foundation and the launch of efforts to tackle the social and political exclusion of London’s Kurdish Diaspora. With Kurds still denied access to their basic human rights simply by virtue of their ethnic origin, and with Turkey's threatened military incursions into Kurdistan, Iraq, there is still much to do to secure rights for Kurds, as a people free from economic and social deprivation, illiteracy and poverty. So please help KHRP today. Together we can celebrate KHRP’s many achievements and honour them by pledging to persevere in the struggle against injustice. Easy ways to help make a difference:
