Employment OpportunitiesVacancy: Resources and Communications Coordinator Job Title: Resources and Communications Co-ordinator Location: London Reporting to: Deputy Director Salary: £ 21 - 28K (depending on experience/ funds available) Deadline: Open until filled (interviews to begin April 17 2008) This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the development of the new Feeney Centre for Research and Dialogue which is part of an established, independent, non-political human rights organisation dedicated to the promotion and protection of the human rights of all persons in the Kurdish regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and elsewhere. The Kurdish Human Rights Project pioneered bringing the individual petition before the European Court of Human Rights. KHRP is a registered charity founded in London in 1992 working with its partner organisations in the regions. It functions as a catalyst for justice through its analysis, advocacy and action. The successful candidate would manage the output of KHRP print and e-publications undertaking the editing, design and layout, updating the website, liaise with the printers and co-ordinate the outreach of KHRP materials. The role would also include the co-ordination of the organisation’s communications, maintaining and developing the Resource Centre, and a variety of other communications/ smaller publications related tasks. Specific Tasks include: Publications (50%) · Co-ordinate the writing, editing, layout and design of KHRP Publications, including the quarterly newsletter, the semi-annual Legal Review, all fact-finding and trial observation reports, annual Impact Report, flyers, pamphlets and event invitations. Standard publications and basic background sheets are designed in-house, while special covers and other materials will go to outside designers, with whom this position will relate. · Preparing publicity and briefing materials for key influential figures in government and private sector · In collaboration with Development Office and other keys staff members, develop the readership and organisational membership base to ensure KHRP Publications are reaching target audiences · Evaluate service partners to ensure high quality and competitive output · Use, maintain and help others use KHRP style guide
Communications (10-20%) · Producing regular press releases and website updates · Fielding media enquiries and other requests for information · Assist in pitching stories, editorials and op-eds to press outlets · Monitor other media coverage of relevant material and keep abreast of current events relevant to KHRP’s work Resource Centre Organisation - Administration (20-25%) · Developing and maintaining the database of both KHRP resource material and that of other organisations · Conduct occasional research on the availability of scholarly materials or other research questions that may arise · Support Collection development, particularly by assisting Deputy Director, Country Desks and other relevant staff members to ensure that KHRP is working in tandem with regional partners to ensure that relevant materials are being circulated and exchanged · Producing public awareness material to distribute to key audiences · Monitoring and Evaluating the demand for KHRP publications · In conjunction with the Office of the Executive Director and the Development Office, co-ordinating arrangements for speaking engagements and identifying key events to promote KHRP’s work. · Assisting with the organisation of both special and regular KHRP public awareness events · Help coordinate roundtable discussions, parliamentary hearings and other public education events
All members of KHRP staff are encouraged to attend, participate in and act as ambassadors for the KHRP at public engagements. This means that from time to time, you will be asked to attend &/ or speak at relevant events or assist others in speech-writing and publication sales. In addition, as a small charity, all staff members are asked to contribute to interdepartmental projects and institution building tasks. Although mostly a London-based position, some travel within Europe and to the Regions may be required. Qualifications: Essential: · B.A. degree or equivalent, demonstrated experience · Minimum 2 years experience of project coordination including excellent organizational skills and the ability to take initiative and prioritize and manage multiple tasks · Experience in designing print publications, and relevant software (InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Professional Edition and similar. Must have understanding of the print process and liaising with designers and printers · Proven ability to schedule and compile regular publications, such as a newsletter or annual report, coordinating and gathering information from various sources · A working knowledge of basic web technologies, programmes and functionalities, including CMS systems · Excellent time-management, problem-prevention, and problem solving skills · Strong writing/ editing skills including spelling, grammar and fluency in English · Capacity to work in a high-pressured environment while remaining calm and ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. Flexibility and a positive attitude. · Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail · Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. · Willingness to work occasional overtime or irregular hours · Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural and representational skills · Strong sense of discretion
Highly Desirable
· 4 years professional experience in a role with comparable responsibilities · Second Language relevant to Kurdish Regions – i.e. Kurdish, Turkish, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Armenian · Demonstrated interest/ commitment to human rights and/or charity work · Knowledge of new technologies for communications
