In early May 2003, KHRP sent a fact-finding mission to Western Iran to investigate human rights and women's rights. The mission observed that there are widespread abuses of human rights in the region. These notably relate to freedom of expression, freedom of religion and belief and discrimination against women. The mission found that Iranian Kurds suffer from a lack of political representation and regional development. The delegation was informed of the Iranian government's prohibition of pro-Kurdish political parties and the lack of constitutional recognition for equal rights for women. The mission was particularly concerned at the absence of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focusing on human rights. Furthermore, the delegation was concerned at the discrimination against women in respect of "honour killings" and family rights including matters of inheritance, divorce and child custody.
