The European Union and Turkish Accession: Human Rights and the Kurds (Kerim Yildiz and Mark Muller QC, Pluto Press, 2008)

Price: £17.99

The EU accession process will shape Turkey’s future and, in particular, its potential to become a plural, democratic state that respects international human rights. In this timely survey, Kerim Yildiz and Mark Muller explain and critically examine the process of accession focusing on both human rights obligations and their implementation in Turkey.

Analysing these key factors, The European Union and Turkish Accession addresses the variety of groups in Turkey that are affected by these negotiations. Central to this evaluation is a detailed study of the Kurdish people – the largest minority group in Turkey - and their relationship to the Turkish republic. The book highlights the implications that the accession process will have on Turkey and the international community.

With the recent Turkish incursions into Kurdistan, Iraq and the ongoing oppression suffered by Kurds in Turkey itself, this book will serve as an essential guide to those interested in the future of Turkey, Europe and the Kurdish people.

Kerim Yildiz is the Executive Director of the Kurdish Human Rights Project, an independent non-political human rights organisation founded in London in 1992. An expert on human rights, minority rights, international law and the Kurdish regions, his extensive works on these topics have been translated into several different languages.

Mark Muller QC is a leading barrister specialising in international human rights cases and criminal related litigation both at home and abroad, who has worked extensively in the Kurdish regions. He is chair of KHRP, the Bar Human Rights Committee (BHRC), trustee of the Delfina Foundation, and a director of the EUTCC (EU Turkey Civic Commission).
